POSTERS OF THE FIRST WORLD WAR
David Bownes and Robert Fleming
Shire Books, £10
ISBN 978-0747814283

A new book, by David Bownes, Head of Collections at the National Army Museum (NAM), and Robert Fleming, curator at the NAM, explores how the First World War inspired a new age of advertising. It presents fresh research on the government’s first tentative steps into the use of commercial advertisers to create their iconic campaigns, alongside striking and colourful images of the posters produced. Communicating with the public was a huge task for the British government throughout the war. As well as needing to recruit on an unprecedented scale, it also needed to inspire support at home. Encouraging private investment, economies of all kinds, and mobilising a new workforce to fill the gaps left by those departing for the Front were all vital to Britain’s success. Posters of the First World War makes use of posters from across the  Commonwealth to explore how both the government and independent organisations went about this great task. Featuring images used in countries including Australia, Canada, South Africa, India, and the West Indies, as well as the UK, the book offers a fascinating comparison between the communication techniques employed around the globe.
